Notes from the Underground
An Introduction
Notes from the Underground is a new book- coming soon- that tells the story of what it has felt like for those of us who have been in the trenches for the last six years. It was then that we began to unite and to talk about the various ways the disruption of our democracy could (and then did) affect how we felt about our government. And we began to realize how it would begin to affect our everyday lives.
For me, it has become a daily ritual to go through the copious amount of lies and disinformation that is regularly bandied about online. And with that knowledge comes the fact that no matter what we think about Mr. Trump, he was and remains a capital marketer. What that really means is that every day becomes one where we must work vigilantly to try and put out the fires. A firestorm of information has been needed to counter and contradict so many of the lies that were out there.
From knowing the Russians had been actively helping the GOP to elect Trump, (I’m thinking of the scene of Paul Manafort handing over Polling Data to Russians!), it has been an eye-opening experience for those of us who didn’t follow politics on a day-to-day basis. The other revelation has been the defections of those Republicans who were solidly in the other camp regarding issues like abortion and Foreign Policy.
In particular, I have been in a different place regarding the Iraq War and the invasion that had lasted almost 20 years. Suddenly this new group of truth-tellers were in the same trench as we were defending our democracy! So that has been a rewarding and truly humbling experience to recognize the significance of what this threat to our democracy has wrought.
The different notes that I have kept dealt with some funny topics, such as “The Trumpy Bear’; as well as the serious idea of how to break through when so many people never seemed to listen. We were screaming our lungs out about what the Trump camp had been capable of doing, and some people were still too complacent.
And so it goes through to the present day where we are still screaming at the top of our lungs that democracy is on the line. And we have even more proof of this after the events of January 6th and the overturning of Roe v Wade. That is the significance of the book and the importance of realizing why it is a clarion call for our message to be heard. Democracy is on the ballot!
